A high-rep dribbling drill that improves change-of-direction control and explosive finishing. Great for warmups, stations, or building confidence on the move.
Set 4ā6 cones in a zig-zag pattern from the sideline toward the lane. Players start at the first cone and dribble through the pattern, making sharp directional changes at each coneācrossover, between-the-legs, or hesitation depending on skill level. After the final cone, players explode downhill into a live finish at the rim.
Encourage players to drop their hips on each change of direction and stay tight to the cones. This creates controlled, game-like movement similar to the footwork used when attacking inĀ 3-on-3 Drive & Kick Decision. Once players reach the final cone and attack downhill, they experience the same quick decision energy found inĀ 3-on-3 Cutthroat. If you want to increase pressure, add a trailing defender at the finish to mimic the chase found inĀ 3-on-2 Drive & Dead.
Run multiple reps in short bursts to keep players moving with intensity.
⢠Require specific moves at each cone
⢠Add a retreat dribble before the final attack
⢠Use weak-hand-only through the entire zig-zag
⢠Add a trailing defender at the rim
⢠Stay low on every change of direction
⢠Keep the dribble tight to the body
⢠Explode out of the final cone
⢠Finish strong with balance and control
Zig-Zag Handle & Go helps players develop tight ball control, sharp changes of direction, and confident downhill attacks. The pattern builds footwork discipline while the finish reinforces aggressive scoring habits. The Zig-Zag Handle & Go drill is an effective way to improve handling and attacking skills in youth players.
