A fast, competitive partner drill that teaches players to read a defenderās cue and instantly choose between a shot or a drive.
Start the offensive player with the ball a few steps away from the defender. The offensive player tosses the ball forward, sprints to collect it, and immediately flows into a live 1v1 attack. The defender closes the gap on the toss and tries to cut off the drive. The ball handler must read the defenderās angleāattack the open hip, stop and change direction, or use a hesitation to freeze the defender.
Encourage players to stay balanced on the pickup and make quick decisions. The immediate advantage read mirrors the downhill choices built inĀ 3-on-3 Drive & Kick Decision. Once the first move happens, the possession plays out live, with players reacting on the fly just like inĀ 3-on-3 Cutthroat. For added difficulty, start players from different angles to mimic the pressure situations seen inĀ 3-on-2 Drive & Dead.
Rotate roles quickly so everyone gets equal attacking and defending reps.
⢠Add a required change-of-direction move after the pickup
⢠Defender starts behind for chase pressure
⢠Require weak-hand finishes only
⢠Add a time limit to force faster decisions
⢠Read the defenderās hips before committing
⢠Stay low on the pickup and protect the ball
⢠Attack the open angle with speed
⢠Change speeds to win the first step
Toss & Read 1v1 teaches players how to attack immediately after gaining possession, read pressure quickly, and use simple moves to win the angle. It builds confident, decisive offensive players. The Toss & Read 1v1 drill is an effective way to develop game-ready ball handling and attacking instincts.
