Tally Ball

How it Works

Play 3v3 or 4v4 in a half court space. The offense earns one point every time they complete four consecutive passes. If the defense deflects the ball, the count resets. If they intercept it, possession changes immediately. You can shrink the space, add dribble limits, or use a shot clock to increase pressure. Keep rounds short so the pace stays competitive. The passing rhythm is similar to the movement patterns in 2-on-1 Keep Away. The spacing and quick decision making connect well to 3-on-3 Pass Cut Replace. If you want to layer in creativity or trick passes, you can borrow ideas from Fancy Passing.

Progression Or Variation

  • Add a no dribble rule to force off ball movement
  • Require a specific pass type to count toward the tally
  • Shrink the court to increase defensive pressure
  • Use timed rounds with teams trying to set a tally record
  • Add a rule that players must move after each catch

Coaching Points

  • Emphasize sharp passes that hit targets in the chest
  • Encourage cutters to create clean passing lanes
  • Remind defenders to use active hands without reaching
  • Reinforce spacing so offense avoids bunching
  • Praise good decisions more than risky highlights

Why This Drill Works

Tally Ball rewards teamwork, precision, and poise under pressure. Players learn to value strong catches, quick reads, and purposeful movement. Because the drill has simple scoring but constant decisions, it naturally teaches players how to maintain possession against active defenders while building habits that transfer directly to real games.
