Red Light, Green Light Dribble

A classic youth basketball game that builds ball control, focus, and reaction time through a fun stop-and-go dribbling challenge. Perfect for Mini Hoopers.

How it Works

All players start on the baseline with a basketball. The coach stands at the opposite end of the gym or court as the traffic controller.

  • When the coach yells “Green Light,” players begin dribbling forward toward the far baseline.
  • When the coach yells “Red Light,” players must stop their dribble and freeze, maintaining ball control.
  • Players who continue dribbling after “Red Light” must dribble two steps backward before the coach makes his next call.
  • The first player to reach the far baseline wins the round.

Progression/Variation

  • Require players to dribble with their non-dominant hand.
  • Add a “Yellow Light” command where players must walk-dribble slowly.
  • Let players take turns being the traffic controller to add more interaction.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on quick reactions while maintaining full control of the ball.
  • Encourage players to keep their heads up rather than looking down at the ball.
  • Reinforce soft fingertip control and staying in an athletic stance.

Why This Drill Works

Red Light, Green Light Dribble combines fundamental ball control with a fun, high-energy game format that keeps Mini Hoopers fully engaged. It teaches young players to react quickly, handle the ball under changing speeds, and maintain focus—all essential skills for real games. The simplicity and competitiveness make it a perfect warm-up or skill builder for early learners who thrive on movement and clear cues.
