Video Breakdown

How it Works

Set up a mini hoop, lower a standard hoop, or use a soft foam ball for very young players. Place floor markers or poly spots close to the basket to guide where players should stand.

  • Players focus on shooting the ball with a high arc, creating a “rainbow” effect toward the basket.
  • Emphasize using soft hands and a full shooting motion with good follow-through.
  • Players shoot from designated spots, then rotate to a new spot after each attempt.
  • Encourage players to visualize a rainbow arc on every shot.

Progression/Variation

  • Require players to bank every shot off the backboard.
  • Add a “rainbow contest” to see who can shoot the highest (without sacrificing aim).
  • Use different angles around the hoop to practice finishing with both hands.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on soft shooting touch and full follow-through with fingers pointing toward the sky.
  • Reinforce good balance and shot preparation, even on short-range attempts.
  • Celebrate high arcs and soft bounces, not just makes.

Why This Drill Works

Many young players struggle with pushing the ball hard enough to reach the hoop, leading to poor habits like two-handed throws. Rainbow Shots teaches proper shooting mechanics in a fun, visual way that kids instantly understand. By focusing on a high arc and soft touch, players naturally develop better technique, stronger hands, and more confidence. It’s a perfect entry point for Mini Hoopers learning to love shooting.
