How it Works
Spread poly spots around the gym floor. Each player gets a basketball. Choose one or two players to be “taggers.” Everyone dribbles freely while taggers try to tag other players. If a player is tagged, they must freeze on their poly spot and hold their dribble in place.
Frozen players can be “unfrozen” when a teammate dribbles over and completes a simple action, such as a high-five or a crossover near them. This teamwork element keeps players connected and encourages awareness, just like movement-heavy games such as Animal Relays. The constant scanning and response also mirror the reaction demands in Coach-Led Reaction.
Allow the game to run for 30–45 seconds, then switch taggers and reset. Players stay active, dribble continuously, and move in and out of traffic, similar to the simple chaos found in Dribble Tag.
Progression Or Variation
• Add more taggers to increase difficulty
• Players must perform a specific move before unfreezing someone
• Use different dribble types: low, high, crossovers, or weak hand only
• Change the poly spot layout each round
Coaching Points
• Keep the dribble low and controlled
• Encourage players to keep eyes up for taggers and teammates
• Move with quick, small steps to stay balanced
• Celebrate teamwork when players help each other
Why This Drill Works
Poly Spot Freeze Tag blends dribbling, movement, and teamwork in a fun, safe format perfect for young players. Kids stay active, improve coordination, and learn to handle the ball while navigating space and helping teammates. The Poly Spot Freeze Tag drill is an ideal warm-up or energy booster for Mini Hoopers.
