Lightning Ladders

A fast Mini Hoopers layup race where two lines compete for the most makes, building finishing confidence, quick movement, and teamwork.

How it Works

Divide players into two lines near the hoop with one ball per line. On your signal, the first player in each line takes a simple layup, then quickly gives the ball to the next player and moves to the back. The goal is to score as many layups as possible in a short round. Keep rounds quick to match the high energy feel of Animal Relays. Encourage players to stay alert and move with purpose, similar to the quick resets in Hungry Hippos. Add excitement by rotating pairs or lines between rounds, much like the partner flow in Buddy Tag.

Progression Or Variation

  • Add a simple dribble obstacle before the layup
  • Require a specific finish such as reverse or inside hand
  • Run shorter timed rounds for intensity
  • Switch lines between rounds
  • Add a weak hand only round

Coaching Points

  • Encourage controlled speed on every layup
  • Remind players to pass the ball quickly and safely
  • Reinforce simple finishing mechanics
  • Keep lines tight to avoid long delays
  • Celebrate hustle and teamwork

Why This Drill Works

Lightning Ladders builds rhythm, speed, and finishing confidence in a simple race format that keeps Mini Hoopers active and engaged. Players learn to move with purpose, finish under light pressure, and work together toward a team goal. These early skills support the same awareness used in the 2-on-2 basketball keep away drill.
