Hungry Hippos

How it Works

Spread beanbags, cones, or “treasures” in the center of the gym. Divide players into small teams and give each player a basketball. On your signal, players dribble from their team’s corner to the center, grab one item, and dribble it back to their home base. They repeat this pattern until all items are collected.

Players must maintain control while moving quickly, keeping their eyes up to navigate traffic. This fun chaos mirrors the movement and awareness used in games like Dribble Tag, where players learn to control the ball while reacting to others around them. As items disappear, players must adjust their paths just like they do in simple reaction games such as Coach-Led Reaction.

Once all items are collected, count them to see which team gathered the most. Reset quickly for another round, or add new movement patterns to increase variation. This fast-paced setup pairs perfectly with energetic coordination drills like Animal Relays.

Progression Or Variation

• Allow players to steal one item at a time from another team’s base
• Use different dribble types: high, low, crossover, or weak hand only
• Make players change directions mid-run on a whistle
• Add a “freeze” command where players must stop and hold the ball

Coaching Points

• Keep the dribble low and under control
• Encourage eyes up to avoid traffic
• Move with purpose—quick but controlled
• Celebrate effort and teamwork

Why This Drill Works

Hungry Hungry Hippos keeps young players excited and moving while naturally developing dribbling control and spatial awareness. The fun format builds confidence and keeps players engaged from start to finish. The Hungry Hungry Hippos drill is an excellent energy booster for Mini Hoopers.
