Dribble Tag

How it Works

Mark a small boundary and give each player a ball. Everyone dribbles inside the space while trying to knock away other players balls without losing their own. If a player loses control or gets tagged out, they complete a simple movement like jumps or slides before rejoining. Keep the energy high and playful, similar to the spirit of Hungry Hippos. Encourage quick direction changes and spatial awareness, much like the movement used in Buddy Tag. Adjust the size of the space to help players stay engaged, just like you adapt boundaries in Wreck It Ralph.

Progression Or Variation

  • Shrink the space to increase challenge
  • Use weak hand only dribbling
  • Add required moves before reentry
  • Play elimination rounds
  • Add a safe zone players can use once per game

Coaching Points

  • Keep the dribble low and controlled
  • Use eyes up to avoid traffic
  • Protect the ball with the body
  • Change speeds to stay unpredictable
  • Reset quickly after each out

Why This Drill Works

Dribble Tag builds ball control, awareness, and confidence in a playful setting that keeps Mini Hoopers active and smiling. Players learn to manage space, protect the ball, and respond to pressure without feeling overwhelmed. These early foundational skills support the same awareness used in the 2-on-2 basketball keep away drill.
