How it Works

Set up 4 to 6 cones in a zig-zag or straight line across the half court or sideline area. Each player starts with a basketball and enough space to dribble through the cones.

  • Players dribble through the cone path, performing a change-of-direction move at each cone.
  • Moves can include crossovers, behind-the-back, or spin moves based on skill level.
  • After the last cone, players explode with a speed dribble to a finish point (like the baseline or the basket).
  • Run it as a timed challenge or head-to-head competition.

Progression/Variation

  • Assign a specific dribble move to each cone to increase difficulty.
  • Add a second ball for advanced players.
  • Include a finishing move at the end, such as a layup or floater.

Coaching Points

  • Emphasize staying low and under control through the cones.
  • Reinforce tight, purposeful dribble moves—not wide, sloppy changes.
  • Encourage eyes up and explosive finishes out of the last cone.

Why This Drill Works

Cone Attack Race brings out the energy and competitiveness in players while reinforcing ball control and dribble technique. It’s one of the easiest ways to build footwork, agility, and handling under pressure without sacrificing fun or structure. Because it’s race-based, players naturally push their speed and execution, which leads to better results—and fewer lazy reps. This drill is a great addition to warmups, stations, or competitive practice segments where players can measure progress over time.
