Beat the Defender Layups

How it Works

Start one offensive player at the three-point line with the ball and a defender a few steps behind or beside them. On your signal, the offensive player drives hard to the basket while the defender chases and applies controlled pressure. The offense must read the defender’s angle—finish quickly if the defender is behind, or use a shielded finish if the defender takes a side angle.

The chase pressure forces players to finish at game speed while maintaining control, similar to the downhill advantage in 2-on-1 Half Court Attack. Vary the defender’s starting position to change the finishing read—behind, on the hip, or slightly ahead. Players should focus on staying tight to the ball side, just like they do in 2-on-1 Keep Away, where protecting the ball under pressure is essential.

Run short, fast reps so players get lots of finishes. As players improve, add different finishing types or require players to adjust midair. The competitive energy transitions well into small-sided games such as 3-on-3 Cutthroat, where quick decisions directly influence possession outcomes.

Progression Or Variation

• Change defender’s starting position to create new reads
• Require weak-hand finishes only
• Use a bump pad for controlled contact
• Add a second trailing defender for increased pressure

Coaching Points

• Attack downhill with speed
• Keep the ball tight and protect it with your body
• Finish high off the glass, not low scoop angles
• Read the defender’s angle before committing to the finish

Why This Drill Works

Beat the Defender Layups gives players real finishing pressure in a simple, controlled setup. It builds confidence, speed, and decision making around the rim. The Beat the Defender Layups drill is an effective way to help youth players finish stronger in game situations.
