How it Works

One offensive player starts on the wing with a basketball. One defender starts under the hoop. A coach or another player stands at the top of the key ready to pass.

  • Coach passes to the offensive player on the wing.
  • As the pass is caught, the defender sprints out from under the rim to contest the layup.
  • The offensive player must finish at the rim before the defender can fully recover.
  • After each rep, players rotate roles to keep everyone involved.

Progression/Variation

  • Allow the offensive player one dribble before the finish.
  • Create a 2v1 situation for added decision-making.
  • Keep score: 1 point per make, 1 point for a defensive stop.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage finishing through contact and adjusting in the air.
  • Teach proper footwork on quick drives and controlled layups.
  • Defenders should challenge vertically—no fouling—and use angles to contest.

Why This Drill Works

Layup lines can build rhythm, but they don’t simulate real game pressure. Beat the Defender Layups forces players to finish with a recovering defender closing hard, just like they’ll see in games. This drill teaches body control, finishing with both hands, and how to adjust when a defender is late but aggressive. It’s an excellent drill to build mental toughness around the rim while also helping defenders learn how to contest smartly without fouling.
