Beat The Clock

A high-energy shooting drill that builds pace, accuracy, and decision-making under time pressure. Great for competition, conditioning, and shooting rhythm.

How it Works

Set up three shooting spots around the arc—typically the left wing, top of the key, and right wing. Each player has a basketball and starts at one of the spots.

  • Players have 60
  • seconds to make as many shots as possible, rotating between the three spots.
  • They rebound their own shot, reset quickly, and move to the next location. There may never be more than one player shooting from a spot and shooters cannot shoot from the same spot twice in a row.
  • Players can keep score of total makes or run multiple rounds to compete for a high score.
  • Drill can be run individually or in small groups, with or without rebounders.

Progression/Variation

  • Add a dribble move before each shot to simulate game pressure.
  • Include layup stations between perimeter spots for conditioning.
  • Reduce the time window to increase intensity and pace.

Coaching Points

  • Reinforce shooting mechanics under fatigue and time pressure.
  • Emphasize footwork, shot preparation, and staying balanced on the move.
  • Encourage players to push their pace without rushing their form.

Why This Drill Works

Beat the Clock adds urgency and intensity to shooting reps, helping players simulate real-game pressure in a controlled drill. It’s an excellent way to build shooting rhythm, pace, and confidence, especially when players compete against their own best scores. Whether you’re coaching young beginners or more experienced players, this drill keeps energy high while reinforcing shooting fundamentals in a competitive format.
