Balloon Tap Dribble

A fun and silly ball-handling drill for early learners that builds coordination, control, and focus—all while keeping a balloon in the air.

How it Works

Each player has a basketball and a balloon. Players start in an open area with enough space to dribble and keep their balloon in the air.

  • Players continuously tap their balloon up into the air with one hand while dribbling the basketball with the other.
  • If the balloon touches the ground, they quickly retrieve it and keep going.
  • The goal is to keep the balloon off the floor as long as possible while maintaining control of the dribble.
  • Coaches can set a timer for 30 to 60 seconds and challenge players to stay active the whole time.

Progression/Variation

  • Use the non-dominant hand for dribbling.
  • Partner version: one balloon for each group of two and they must tap the balloon back and forth while maintaining control of their dribble.
  • Add music and turn it into a “last balloon standing” game.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage kids to keep their eyes up and move their feet.
  • Focus on soft balloon taps and low, controlled dribbles.
  • Reinforce using fingertips—not palms—for better ball control.

Why This Drill Works

Balloon Tap Dribble blends fun and fundamentals—perfect for kindergarten and early elementary players. It builds hand-eye coordination, ball control, and focus without the pressure of competition. The silly challenge of keeping a balloon airborne while dribbling adds laughter and excitement, which helps young players stay engaged and willing to make mistakes as they learn. It’s a great way to introduce ball-handling in a joyful, age-appropriate way.
