How it Works

Place five cones around the paint—one on the left block, one on the right block, one directly in front of the rim, and one each at the short corner or wing areas on both sides. Each player starts with a ball and rotates through the cones.

  • Player begins at the first cone and drives in for a layup.
  • After finishing, they move to the next cone and repeat the process.
  • Players should alternate hands and use correct footwork based on the angle.
  • The goal is to complete a layup at all five spots, either for time or total makes.

Progression/Variation

  • Add a coach or player with a blocking pad to apply light pressure at the rim.
  • Designate specific cones where players must use their weak hand.
  • Make it competitive with timed relays or 1v1 challenge rounds.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on balance and body control going into each layup.
  • Reinforce proper hand use and footwork depending on angle and finish.
  • Encourage soft finishes off the glass and high arcs for younger players.

Why This Drill Works

This drill helps players build confidence finishing from different angles while reinforcing footwork and layup technique. It also introduces variety, which keeps younger players more engaged than repetitive layup lines. Whether you’re coaching kindergartners or older elementary players, this drill scales easily to challenge every level. Plus, the rotation-based design means you can keep kids moving with little downtime and lots of touches near the basket.
