5-3-1 Shooting Relay

A fast paced relay that builds shooting rhythm, conditioning, and teamwork as players race to complete makes from three different spots on the floor.

How it Works

Split players into two or more lines with one ball per team. Mark three shooting spots: close, mid, and long. Teams must make five shots from the first spot, three from the second, and one from the last before rotating shooters. Keep the tempo high so players rebound quickly and flow into the next attempt. If teams slow down, remind them of the pace you’d expect in Beat The Clock. You can also encourage clean footwork and ready catches the same way you would in Fancy Passing. To build competition, track wins across rounds like you do in 3-on-3 Must Touch the Paint. Reset spots and switch shooters each round to keep everyone active.

Progression Or Variation

  • Add a dribble move before each shot
  • Change the required number of makes per spot
  • Add a time limit for each relay
  • Require shooters to alternate hands on finishes
  • Expand to five spots for advanced groups

Coaching Points

  • Shoot in rhythm with balanced feet
  • Rebound with urgency and outlet quickly
  • Keep communication constant within each team
  • Focus on clean catches and set-ups
  • Stay locked in even during fast transitions

Why This Drill Works

This relay builds shooting rhythm, conditioning, and teamwork by combining repetition with competitive urgency. Players learn to shoot under pressure, rebound with purpose, and stay mentally sharp through fast transitions. The 5-3-1 Shooting Relay strengthens habits that translate directly into real game shooting moments.
