A 3-on-3 drill that teaches players how to set and use screens effectively to create scoring opportunities through movement and timing.
Everything starts from a standard 3-on-3 Cutthroat setup. You can view the full breakdown of 3-on-3 Cutthroat by clicking here or by watching the video below. Once you are familiar with the drill, you can then add this variation to your daily practices.
Play live 3-on-3, but require the offense to use at least one screen before they can attempt a shot. Screens can be on-ball or off-ball. Start each possession with a coach pass or quick check at the top. The screener must arrive on balance, hold the screen long enough to create contact, and then open up to space.
The ball handler reads the defender: drive, shoot, or hit the screener on the roll or pop. Off-ball screens create curls, fades, or slips depending on the defense. These reads mirror the quick decision moments players face in 3-on-3 Drive & Kick Decision, where spacing and timing create natural advantages.
Once the screen action creates an advantage, play live until the possession finishes. Reinforce cutting and replacing on the weak side to maintain spacing, similar to the movement patterns in 3-on-3 Pass, Cut & Replace. Keep the competitive flow high by rotating teams quickly, just like in 3-on-3 Cutthroat.
• Require two screens before a shot
• Only allow off-ball screens for the first 10 seconds
• Add a bonus point for assisted baskets
• Allow slips only when defenders switch
• Set screens on balance and make contact
• Read the defender: curl, fade, slip, or pop
• Keep spacing wide to open screening angles
• Communicate early so screeners and handlers connect
3-on-3 Screen to Score helps players learn how screening creates advantages while keeping the game simple and competitive. It builds timing, communication, and decision making in live situations.
