3-on-3 Rebound & Outlet

A 3-on-3 drill that turns every rebound into a transition opportunity, building toughness, outlet skills, and competitive energy.

Introduction

Everything starts from a standard 3-on-3 Cutthroat setup. You can view the full breakdown of 3-on-3 Cutthroat by clicking here or by watching the video below. Once you are familiar with the drill, you can then add this variation to your daily practices.

How it Works

Play live 3-on-3 half-court with a strong emphasis on rebounding and outlet execution.

  • Standard check-up at the top. Play begins live.
  • On a shot, defense must secure the rebound, then immediately outlet to a designated outlet player or area.
  • Once the outlet is made, defenders rotate off and new offensive players come in.
  • If the offense scores, they stay on.
  • You can track successful rebounds and clean outlets for competition.

Progression/Variation

  • Add a time constraint: outlet must be made within 2 seconds of rebound.
  • Designate a player as the automatic outlet receiver and rotate that role.
  • Use two outlet spots (left and right) to simulate game situations.
  • Introduce a trailing defender to apply pressure after outlet pass.

Coaching Points

  • Emphasize high-pointing the rebound and chinning the ball on the catch.
  • Teach players to pivot and scan quickly before making the outlet.
  • Reinforce outlet angles — push the ball up the sideline when possible.
  • Great chance to teach bigs and guards how to work together in transition.

Why This Drill Works

Most coaches run transition drills in isolation — but this drill creates transition out of real game situations. It builds rebounding toughness, quick decision-making, and cleaner outlets that lead to fast breaks. The 3-on-3 format keeps it competitive and game-like from start to finish.
