3-on-3 Next Play Wins

A high-pressure, one-possession drill that builds focus, execution, and resilience in game-winning scenarios.

Introduction

Everything starts from a standard 3-on-3 Cutthroat setup. You can view the full breakdown of 3-on-3 Cutthroat by clicking here or by watching the video below. Once you are familiar with the drill, you can then add this variation to your daily practices.

How it Works

This is a mindset and execution drill disguised as a game-winner scenario.

  • Play standard 3-on-3 Cutthroat
  • The first team to score wins.
  • If there’s a foul, turnover, or missed shot, play ends immediately and teams rotate.
  • This creates a high-pressure, do-or-die environment where every possession matters.
  • You can rotate new teams in quickly or keep a winner-stays format.

Progression/Variation

  • Add a time constraint (e.g., 10 seconds to score).
  • Force the offense to run a specific action (e.g., ball screen, flare, post entry).
  • Reverse it: only the defense can win the round with a stop.
  • Start with a disadvantage (e.g., defense starts in help position or late closeout).

Coaching Points

  • Focus on poise and execution under pressure — every cut, pass, and shot counts.
  • Reinforce communication and trust on defense — one breakdown can end the round.
  • Encourage players to flush mistakes and be ready for the next opportunity.
  • Great time to teach the mental side of the game: urgency, composure, and confidence.

Why This Drill Works

Games are often decided by a single possession — this drill replicates that. It forces players to lock in, value each touch, and execute when it matters most. It also builds a culture of competition and teaches players how to move on quickly, win or lose.
