How it Works
Set up two teams of two inside a marked space such as the lane or a half-court box. Offense scores by completing a set number of consecutive passes without the defense touching the ball. Encourage players to move without the ball and create simple passing angles, similar to the spacing habits reinforced in Fancy Passing. If players get too stationary, shrink the space like you might in 3-on-3 Must Touch the Paint to force quicker decisions. As the drill flows, push the tempo and emphasize ball security the same way you would in Beat The Clock. Rotate roles every minute to keep the reps high.
Progression Or Variation
- Require at least one cut before each pass
- Add a time limit for the offense to reach their pass goal
- Shrink the playing space to increase pressure
- Limit players to pivoting only, no dribble escape
- Add a defender earning a point for every deflection
Coaching Points
- Create passing angles with constant movement
- Protect the ball and stay strong on catches
- Communicate early and often
- Pass with purpose, not panic
- Read defender positioning before throwing the ball
Why This Drill Works
This drill teaches players how to move with purpose, support teammates, and handle pressure in small spaces. It builds decision making, ball security, and awareness under controlled chaos. Players quickly learn how spacing and timing create advantages in the 2-on-2 Keep Away environment.
