3-on-3 Shell to Live

Introduction

Everything starts from a standard 3-on-3 Cutthroat setup. You can view the full breakdown of 3-on-3 Cutthroat by clicking here or by watching the video below. Once you are familiar with the drill, you can then add this variation to your daily practices.

How it Works

Start with three offensive players spaced around the perimeter and three defenders in classic shell positions. Begin with controlled ball movement—offense passes the ball while defenders jump to the ball, close out, and maintain help position. After 3–5 clean rotations, call “Live!” and the possession immediately becomes full live 3-on-3.

Defenders must communicate through every rotation and keep their shape as the ball moves. Once the play becomes live, players should apply the same closeout and help habits they practiced during the shell portion. This controlled-to-live pattern mirrors the defensive scramble moments taught in 3-on-3 Closeout & Recover.

Offense should look to attack quickly once the live call happens—drive the gaps, cut behind rotations, or swing into an advantage. These actions lead naturally into competitive games like 3-on-3 Cutthroat, and the flowing movement supports spacing and timing patterns similar to 3-on-3 No Dribble.

Progression Or Variation

• Increase the number of shell rotations before going live
• Add a paint-touch requirement during the live segment
• Allow only backdoor cuts for the first five seconds of live play
• Require a closeout from a designated defender before “Live!” is called

Coaching Points

• Talk early and stay connected through rotations
• Close out under control with high hands
• Stay in help position and anticipate the next pass
• Sprint into live defense when the call is made

Why This Drill Works

3-on-3 Shell to Live blends teaching and competition, helping players understand defensive responsibilities before applying them in real-time gameplay. It reinforces communication, positioning, and scramble habits that carry directly into games. The 3-on-3 Shell to Live drill is an excellent way to build strong, connected youth defensive units.
