How it Works

Spread several poly spots (flat floor markers) randomly across the gym or court. Choose two or three players to be taggers. All other players have a basketball and start freely dribbling around the space.

  • Taggers attempt to tag other players while moving without basketballs.
  • Players who are tagged must freeze in place, holding their ball overhead.
  • To unfreeze a frozen player, a teammate must dribble around them one full circle without losing control of the ball.
  • Players can step onto a poly spot for three seconds of “safe zone” time to avoid getting tagged, but they must move off after three seconds.

Progression/Variation

  • Require players to dribble with their non-dominant hand during the game.
  • Gradually increase the number of taggers to make it more challenging.
  • Assign special “power spots” where players gain the ability to unfreeze two teammates instead of one.

Coaching Points

  • Emphasize dribbling with eyes up to spot taggers and open space.
  • Reinforce controlled changes of direction while maintaining balance and ball control.
  • Encourage quick decisions—when to attack, when to find safety, and when to help teammates.

Why This Drill Works

Poly Spot Freeze Tag blends dribbling fundamentals with spatial awareness, quick thinking, and teamwork. The flat, non-slip poly spots make it safer and easier to manage than hula hoops, especially for energetic Mini Hoopers. Players love the competitive, fast-paced nature of the game, while coaches love how much ball-handling, decision-making, and communication is happening naturally. It’s an ideal combination of fun and fundamentals for early learners.
