Hungry Hippos

A high-energy dribbling game that builds ball control, awareness, and hustle as players race to collect the most items while keeping their dribble alive.

How it Works

Scatter cones, bean bags, or softballs across the center of the court. Each player starts on the baseline with a basketball and an assigned “home base” spot to return to.

  • On the coach’s signal, players dribble toward the center, pick up one item, and dribble it back to their home base.
  • Players must maintain their dribble while retrieving and returning items.
  • After placing the item at their home base, they dribble back out to grab another.
  • The player with the most items at the end of a timed round wins.

Progression/Variation

  • Require players to use their non-dominant hand for dribbling.
  • Add cones or obstacles that players must dribble around before reaching the center.
  • Create partner teams: one player dribbles, one collects items.

Coaching Points

  • Emphasize keeping the dribble alive, even when bending down to pick up an item.
  • Encourage players to keep their heads up and stay aware of other players on the court.
  • Reinforce quick, controlled dribbling rather than wild or rushed movements.

Why This Drill Works

Hungry Hippos turns basic dribbling skills into a chaotic, high-energy game that young players love. It forces kids to dribble under control while navigating traffic, reacting quickly, and thinking ahead. Plus, it sneaks in conditioning and teamwork without players even realizing they’re working hard. It’s the perfect Mini Hoopers drill to get maximum touches, tons of laughs, and real ball-handling improvement.
