Red Light, Green Light Dribble

How it Works

Give each player a basketball and plenty of open space. Players start on one side of the court while you stand on the other. When you call “Green Light!” players dribble forward with control. When you call “Red Light!” players must stop immediately and hold their dribble in place. Any player who moves or loses control returns to the starting line or takes a small step back.

Use clear, energetic cues to keep players engaged. Mix in speed changes, hand switches, and direction changes. This listening-and-reaction format is similar to how players respond to quick cues in Color Call Shooting. The freeze-and-move rhythm also mirrors the fun stop-and-start challenge found in Poly Spot Freeze Tag. To add more excitement, blend in movement creativity inspired by Animal Relays.

Play until players reach the far baseline, then reset and run another round with new rules or speeds.

Progression Or Variation

• Add “Yellow Light” for slow-motion dribbling
• Switch dribbling hands each round
• Add a required move (crossover, behind-the-back) on each Green Light
• Call multiple lights rapidly to test reactions

Coaching Points

• Keep dribble low and controlled
• Stay balanced when stopping on Red Light
• Keep eyes up to react quickly
• Encourage fun and creativity

Why This Drill Works

Red Light, Green Light Dribble builds control, attention, and movement confidence in a simple game format Mini Hoopers love. It teaches players to react quickly while staying in control of the ball. The Red Light, Green Light Dribble drill is a perfect warm-up or energy-boosting activity.
