How it Works

Place several hula hoops on the floor standing upright, leaning against cones, chairs, or propped slightly with light tape if needed. Each player has a basketball and starts a few feet away from the first hoop.

  • Players attempt to pass the ball cleanly through the opening of the hula hoop using chest passes or bounce passes.
  • Players move from one hoop to the next after each successful pass.
  • Track how many hoops a player can pass through successfully in a row.
  • Emphasize clean, accurate passes that pass through without touching the sides.

Progression/Variation

  • Require different pass types at different hoops (e.g., bounce pass through lower hoops, chest pass through higher hoops).
  • Increase the distance between players and the hoops to challenge arm strength and accuracy.
  • Time the circuit and reward players for completing a full round with minimal misses.

Coaching Points

  • Teach players to step into their pass for more power and control.
  • Emphasize wrist snap and follow-through directly toward the center of the hoop.
  • Encourage players to reset quickly and focus on their aim before each pass.

Why This Drill Works

Passing often gets overlooked with young players, especially when accuracy is needed under control. Hula Hoop Passing Rings gives players a visual, achievable goal that demands proper form. The size of the hoop encourages precision without overwhelming younger players, making it the perfect challenge for Mini Hoopers learning how to pass sharply and accurately in a fun, creative way.
