Dribble Animal Walks

How it Works

Give each player a basketball and plenty of space. Call out an animal—such as crab, bear, kangaroo, or giraffe—and players dribble while moving like that animal around the court. For example, “crab” means low lateral slides, “bear” means forward crawling steps, and “kangaroo” means small controlled hops while keeping the dribble steady.

Encourage players to keep their eyes up and maintain control no matter how silly or creative the movement becomes. This playful style fits perfectly with movement games like Animal Relays, where imagination and activity keep kids engaged. You can also layer in simple reaction elements similar to Coach-Led Reaction, helping players respond quickly to new commands.

As players improve, mix in direction changes, speed changes, or new animals. The constant movement and dribbling help prepare Mini Hoopers for more active tag-based games such as Dribble Tag.

Progression Or Variation

• Add new animals with different dribble patterns
• Call out “switch!” to change animals mid-dribble
• Add color or cone targets to dribble toward
• Create short races while staying in character

Coaching Points

• Keep eyes up while moving
• Stay low and control the dribble
• Use fingertips, not palms
• Have fun and commit to the movement

Why This Drill Works

Dribble Animal Walks combines imagination, movement, and ball control in a way that keeps young players excited and active. It builds coordination and dribbling confidence without pressure. The Dribble Animal Walks drill is a perfect warm-up or energy booster for Mini Hoopers.
