How it Works

Players line up at a shooting spot close to the basket—this could be a free throw line, elbow, or a spot tailored for younger players. Two balls are in play. The first two players in line each start with a basketball.

  • Player 1 shoots first. As soon as they release, Player 2 can shoot.
  • If Player 1 makes the shot before Player 2, they pass the ball to the next person in line and move to the back.
  • If Player 2 makes their shot before Player 1, Player 1 is knocked out and goes to a designated redemption station.
  • Redemption twist: eliminated players can re-enter by completing a challenge such as making three form shots at a side hoop.

Progression/Variation

  • Use different spots on the floor for each round (short corner, wing, elbow).
  • Require a weak-hand finish after each made shot before returning to the line.
  • Add a dribble move before each shot to simulate game rhythm.

Coaching Points

  • Reinforce proper shooting form, even under pressure.
  • Encourage kids to focus on their own shot rather than rushing in panic.
  • Use the redemption station as a chance to reinforce fundamentals like form shooting or layups.

Why This Drill Works

This twist on the classic knockout game keeps the energy high while adding meaningful skill development. The built-in redemption option reduces pressure for younger players and encourages reps instead of early elimination. It adds intensity, rhythm shooting, and decision-making—all in a format kids love. Knockout With a Twist is perfect as a fun finisher or to keep large groups engaged during downtime or transitions in practice.
