Rock Paper Scissors Attack

A competitive 1v1 drill where rock paper scissors decides who attacks and who defends, building quick decisions and confident finishing.

How it Works

Place a ball on the floor between two players. They play a quick game of rock paper scissors. The winner grabs the ball and immediately attacks the rim for a layup or short jumper. The loser becomes the defender and closes out fast to contest without fouling. After the rep, reset and play again. Keep rounds short so players stay sharp and competitive. The quick transition from decision to action mirrors the live reaction moments in Chaser Layups. The chase and pressure feel similar to the finishing reads in Beat the Defender Layups. If you want to layer in more decision making, you can work in simple angle reads like the ones used in Matador Layups.

Progression Or Variation

  • Add weak hand only finishes
  • Change the starting distance from the ball
  • Require a specific move before the shot
  • Use series scoring such as best of five
  • Add a pump fake rule for the offensive player

Coaching Points

  • Tell attackers to explode on the first step
  • Remind defenders to close out under control
  • Encourage players to finish strong and stay balanced
  • Keep reps quick to maintain the competitive feel
  • Reinforce clean, safe contests without reaching

Why This Drill Works

Rock Paper Scissors Attack blends reaction, competition, and simple 1v1 finishing into a format players love. It trains players to make fast decisions, attack with purpose, and defend on instinct. Because the start is unpredictable, it mirrors real game situations where players must react instantly and create an advantage.
