Passing Tag

A Mini Hoopers movement game where Taggers use bounce passes to tag Runners, building passing control, awareness, and quick reactions.

How it Works

Create a clear boundary using cones or lines. Select a few Taggers and give each of them a ball. Everyone else becomes a Runner. Taggers move around the space trying to tag Runners by bouncing the ball off the floor so it hits a Runner’s legs. When a Runner is tagged, they freeze for a quick exercise, then rejoin the game. After a short round, rotate new Taggers in. The constant movement feels similar to the energy in Buddy Tag. The focus on bounce passing control connects to the accuracy demanded in Castle Protectors. If you want players to recognize space and react faster, you can blend in simple visual cues like those used in Hand Signal Dribbling.

Progression Or Variation

  • Shrink or widen the space to adjust difficulty
  • Add limits such as bounce pass only or weak hand only
  • Require Runners to dribble while escaping
  • Add a time challenge for Taggers to earn points
  • Rotate Taggers more frequently to keep everyone active

Coaching Points

  • Emphasize controlled bounce passes aimed at the lower legs
  • Remind Runners to stay low, move with awareness, and change direction
  • Encourage Taggers to keep their eyes up so tags are intentional
  • Reinforce safe movement and spacing
  • Keep rounds short so energy and focus stay high

Why This Drill Works

Passing Tag builds passing accuracy, spatial awareness, and quick reactions in a fast moving, playful format. Mini Hoopers learn to move with purpose, handle pressure, and deliver controlled passes while staying engaged. It is an easy way to layer fundamentals into a game kids naturally enjoy.
