Pass the Rock

A Mini Hoopers passing game where players communicate, find new receivers, and keep the ball moving through constant role and position changes.

How it Works

Set up a small cone marked area in the middle of the court. A few players start inside the area while the rest space out around the perimeter. Inside players receive a pass from an outside player, quickly find a new teammate to pass to, and call that player’s name before delivering the pass. After passing, players on the perimeter can take a small cut or reposition to create new angles. Keep everyone rotating roles so inside players become outside players and vice versa. The quick decision making feels similar to the movement patterns in Bridge Builders. The defensive awareness piece ties nicely to the reactions you develop in Buddy Tag. If you want to layer in more control, you can add simple passing challenges like the ones used in Toss and Catch Challenge.

Progression Or Variation

  • Add a pass limit before players must switch roles
  • Require bounce passes or chest passes only
  • Allow outside players to take small cuts to create passing windows
  • Add a light defender inside the cone area
  • Shrink or widen the space to change difficulty

Coaching Points

  • Encourage clear communication before every pass
  • Remind players to stay balanced and ready to receive
  • Emphasize stepping toward the ball on catches
  • Promote quick decision making without rushing
  • Rotate roles often so everyone stays active and engaged

Why This Drill Works

Pass the Rock builds communication, spacing, and decision making in a simple, high repetition setting. Mini Hoopers learn to identify open teammates, deliver accurate passes, and stay alert as players move around them. These early habits support the teamwork and ball movement skills they will need as they advance into more structured play.
