Inch Worms

How it Works

Split players into small teams and line them up in a straight line. Each player balances a basketball on the back of the teammate in front of them. When everyone is set, the team begins moving slowly toward a cone or finish line. If a ball drops, the whole group returns to the last checkpoint and resets. Keep the energy playful and cooperative, similar to the teamwork used in Construction Site. For added fun, shorten or widen the space like you might in Hungry Hippos. Celebrate each team’s progress the same way you build excitement in Wreck It Ralph.

Progression Or Variation

  • Add a light dribbling task before the next checkpoint
  • Change the distance between players
  • Add turns or zig zag paths
  • Require teams to switch order after each round
  • Use timed rounds for quick competition

Coaching Points

  • Encourage calm, steady movement
  • Remind players to communicate
  • Keep spacing consistent between teammates
  • Reset quickly after a dropped ball
  • Celebrate teamwork more than winning

Why This Drill Works

Inch Worms builds coordination, balance, and teamwork through an engaging and playful group challenge. Mini Hoopers learn to move with control, support teammates, and stay focused on a common goal. These early movement skills connect to the same foundational awareness used in the 2-on-2 basketball keep away drill.
