How it Works
Start a player in the paint with their back or shoulder pressed into a live defender. The offense must pivot, protect the ball, and finish without using a dribble. Once players show control, add a single dribble or a simple fake to create space. Keep reps short and physical, similar to the tight angle finishes you get in Beat The Defender Layups. Encourage creative footwork and balance the same way players explore new finishes in Ugly Layups. For added challenge, require specific pivots or angles that mirror the pressure moments found in Matador Layups. Switch roles after a set number of makes.
Progression Or Variation
- Add a limited dribble after first pivot
- Require a specific finish such as inside hand or reverse
- Add a fake before the pivot
- Increase physical pressure for older groups
- Play to a set score before switching roles
Coaching Points
- Keep the ball tight to the chest
- Pivot with strength and balance
- Use fakes to move the defender
- Finish through contact with control
- Stay patient and do not rush the shot
Why This Drill Works
Dead in the Paint teaches players how to finish in crowded space without relying on the dribble. The drill builds strength, balance, and poise by forcing players to pivot with purpose and finish through contact. These skills mirror the same controlled finishing habits used in the 2-on-2 basketball keep away drill.
