3-on-2 Drive & Dead

How it Works

Start three offensive players at the top with two defenders set on the blocks. On your signal, the ball handler drives hard into the paint and must make a decision once the defense collapses. The ball cannot be dribbled after the drive stops, which forces quick reads and purposeful spacing. If players hesitate, remind them how simple passing angles show up in drills like Fancy Passing. Encourage attackers to stay aggressive the same way they would in 3-on-3 Must Touch the Paint. To keep tempo high, reset immediately after each rep, similar to the rhythm you build in Beat The Clock.

Progression Or Variation

  • Require one extra pass before any shot
  • Add a trailing defender to make it 3-on-3 once the drive stops
  • Start the defense higher to create tighter reads
  • Limit players to catch and shoot only
  • Add a scoring system that rewards decisiveness

Coaching Points

  • Drive with intent to force a reaction
  • Keep spacing wide and visible
  • Make fast, simple decisions once the ball is dead
  • Show hands early as receivers
  • Shoot in rhythm off clean kickouts

Why This Drill Works

This drill sharpens decision making by putting the ball handler in a pressure moment where hesitation kills the possession. Players learn how spacing, timing, and quick reads unlock clean shots even when the dribble is gone. It’s a great way to simulate real possessions where players must solve problems on the fly using the concepts behind the 3-on-2 Drive & Dead drill.
