Fancy Passing

A fun, high-energy passing drill that blends creativity with control. Players practice behind-the-back, wrap, and around-the-world passes while staying balanced and accurate.

How it Works

Pair players up about 8–10 feet apart with one ball. Partners pass back and forth using creative, skill-building variations such as behind-the-back, wraparound, one-hand push passes, or around-the-world patterns. Each pass should still be accurate and controlled, even when the movement looks flashy.

Encourage players to stay balanced, keep their eyes up, and focus on clean catches before adding speed. As they get more comfortable, increase tempo or add movement. These creative passing reps carry into small sided games likeĀ 2-on-2 Keep Away, where players must find windows and move the ball quickly under pressure. You can also transition the passing into advantage situations similar toĀ 2-on-1 Keep AwayĀ or flow into competitive actions found inĀ 3-on-3 Cutthroat.

Run quick rounds—20 to 30 seconds—then switch variations or have partners choose their own. Keep the energy high and the creativity flowing.

Progression Or Variation

• Add movement: shuffle, slide, or backpedal while passing
• One-hand passing only (right hand round, then left)
• Add a ā€œreaction callā€ for sudden change passes
• Time each round and count clean completions

Coaching Points

• Stay balanced and step into each pass
• Snap the wrist for clean, straight deliveries
• Cushion the catch—soft hands, eyes on the ball
• Be creative but stay in control

Why This Drill Works

Fancy Passing builds coordination, creativity, and ball-handling confidence in a fun, low-pressure environment. Players learn to make quick reads, strengthen their passing mechanics, and develop better touch on the ball. The Fancy Passing drill is a great way to build strong fundamentals through engaging partner work.
