Rip The Ball

How it Works

Pair players up with one ball. Both players hold the ball firmly between them. On your signal, they fight to rip the ball free using strong footwork, balance, and body control. The first player to take complete possession wins the round. Reset quickly and switch partners after several reps.

Players should stay low, use their legs for power, and keep a wide base to avoid getting pulled off balance. These physical, game-like battles translate directly to rebounding and scramble moments like those in 3-on-3 Rebound & Outlet. The competitive format also mirrors the urgency found in 3-on-3 Next Play Wins.

As players get stronger, increase resistance or require controlled pivots before the rip. You can also turn it into a possession race similar to the energy in 3-on-3 Cutthroat, where every win matters.

Progression Or Variation

• Require a defensive stance before ripping
• Add a “rip then pivot” requirement
• Make players win two rips in a row to earn a point
• Start players seated or on one knee for added challenge

Coaching Points

• Stay low with a wide base
• Use legs, not arms, for strength
• Keep eyes up and maintain balance
• Rip hard and secure the ball tight to the body

Why This Drill Works

Rip the Ball builds strength, competitiveness, and physical toughness. Players learn how to secure possession in real game situations and improve their confidence in pressure battles. The Rip the Ball drill is a great way to teach grit and strong fundamentals in youth practices.
