How it Works
Start with a ball handler dribbling toward a defender who begins arm’s length away. On your signal, the offensive player tosses the ball forward, sprints to collect it, and immediately attacks. The defender applies controlled pressure. If the defender cuts off the drive, the ball handler uses a retreat dribble to create space, then re-attacks in a new direction.
The goal is to stay poised while using the retreat dribble to reset angles—not to run away. Players should drop their hips, push back sharply, and keep their eyes up for the next attack window. These same re-attack reads show up in competitive games like 3-on-3 Drive & Kick Decision. Once players escape pressure, they can flow into new angles similar to the movement habits in 3-on-3 Pass, Cut & Replace. For added intensity, turn the finish into a live race to the rim like in 3-on-3 Next Play Wins.
Rotate roles quickly so every player gets multiple attacks and defensive reps.
Progression Or Variation
• Add a required change-of-direction move after the retreat
• Defender must touch the paint before recovering
• Use weak-hand-only attacks for full rounds
• Add a timer: three seconds to re-attack after the retreat
Coaching Points
• Retreat with purpose—create space, not distance
• Keep eyes up through the retreat and re-attack
• Stay low and protect the ball on pressure reads
• Change speeds sharply to win the angle
Why This Drill Works
Toss & Go with Retreat Dribble helps players build poise under pressure while learning to create space and re-attack effectively. It improves ball control, footwork, and offensive confidence. The Toss & Go with Retreat Dribble drill is an excellent tool for developing skilled, composed ball handlers.
