A high-tempo shooting drill that teaches balance, follow-through, and consistent rhythm while building conditioning through continuous rebound-and-retreat reps.
Players start at a designated shooting spot with one ball. On your signal, they shoot, rebound their own ball, retreat back to the spot, and immediately shoot again. The pattern stays simple: shoot → rebound → retreat → repeat. Run for time (20–45 seconds) or makes (5–10 makes per spot).
Encourage players to sprint into the spot, land on balance, and flow right into their shot. This rhythm-based approach matches the tempo players use in competitive games like 3-on-3 Cutthroat. When run from multiple floor spots, players learn to adjust footwork angles similar to the movement patterns in 3-on-3 Pass, Cut & Replace. For added pressure, turn it into a timed round like the urgency built in 3-on-3 Next Play Wins.
Rotate players quickly so the drill stays fast and game-paced.
• Add a required dribble move before each shot
• Use catch-and-shoot on some rounds, pull-ups on others
• Run through multiple spots around the arc
• Add a weak-hand finishing version near the rim
• Sprint into the spot and land balanced
• Keep eyes on the rim early
• Hold your follow-through
• Maintain a consistent pace throughout the round
Take Back Shots builds shooting rhythm, conditioning, and focus through rapid, repeatable reps. It helps players learn to shoot in motion while staying balanced and confident. The Take Back Shots drill is an effective way to boost shot volume and game-speed timing.
